I have heard the theory that Tooth and Nail only promotes it's Gold artists. Obviously this is a bit exaggerated, but I understand the point of it - 3 or 4 of the biggest names get 90 percent of the attention. At first I was skeptical of this theory. However, things are changing for me...
Surrogate released their debut full-length on August 28th. This is a very good record. It has great style, a great vibe, and originality. With such a great record, you'd think heavy promotion would be in store for this T&N newb. WRONG.
None of the splash pages on toothandnail.com inform visitors about the Surrogate release. No news post on the site mentions the band since days before the release.
Oh, and what about Children 18:3. And The Famine. Both bands are officially on the label, but no serious announcements have been made.
There are many aspects to take into consideration... obviously, the bigger names sell more, thus leaving a reason to heavily promote. But why sign a band if you're going to act like they don't exist? I'm not telling T&N how to run the business, I'm just wondering if they really care about whether I buy their releases or not, and why it seems like they sign bands and then keeping them hidden in obscurity.
I don't know if it's just me, but it feels like Tooth and Nail used to be a leader in quality - both in music and the music industry. Nowadays, bands go months without websites, fans are disconnected with news and happenings, and new acts seem to be meer imitations of mainstream acts.

Remember The Lonely Hearts - Paper Tapes??? One of the best releases of 2006 and T&N did not give them real promotion because TLH had only a "1 album pending contract" because of the Holland stuff. So sad. I love the Nail but this things make me cry.
the last 5 news posts are about emery, underoath, mxpx, and the almost.
and nothing abuot the new far less song.
you market your moneymakers, so it makes sense, but they also do a lot of tours with smaller bands (emery with ruth/surrogate, etc) supporting their main ones.
underoath, emery, anberlin, mxpx, are obviously going to get the most attention.
I have a feeling Children 18:3 are going to get a huge push from them. It's just that they're not gonna hype up a band thats not releasing their record until Spring. Well maybe thats just me being biased since I've been following them for many years (I'm from MN, those guys/girl are legends here) and I really think they should get the push they deserve. I still think we gotta give T&N the benefit of the doubt, obviously they are doing something right considering their incredible growth over the past few years. While the rest of the record industry is tanking at an incredible rate, T&N is getting bigger everyday. Lets hope they can keep it up.

i disagree... bands like Surrogate and children 18:3 arent as marketable or popular (especially in the scene nowadays) to promote them would be like promoting Oh Sleeper in the night clubs and inner cities of the Bronx. some people enjoy them and like their music, the masses dont... so the people who do already know they exist and follow them regularly. why spend thousands on promoting a band that wont get the results the label is looking for? there are also bands who dont enjoy touring constantly and just want somewhere to call home. bands such as Surrogate. and if T&N was only supporting band that went Gold, i think they would support all of what 2 bands??? i could be wrong on that figure... and the label is still Dominating the scene! and to please everyone they put out all types of bands, (even if they sound like mainstream replicas). i would rather listen to Jonzetta and get a positive message as opposed to listening to The Killers or some other mainstream artist. just because you may not like all the bands or think theyre all original doesnt mean everyone else doesnt like them too. i think the scene needs bands that are equal to mainstream artists, its somewhere for people to turn for something positive. numerous other labels do the same thing... Facedown records didnt necessarily give With Blood Comes Cleansing all the attention the deserved, and they still made it to Victory. labels have to try new things and sign new bands to stay keep up with the comptition, just because T&N is doing the same thing doesnt mean thyre evil. if you can find ANY other label that gives all its bands equal recognition then ill sign my house over to you right now. or any company in any industry... its a fact of life that when things are more popular they get more promotion, take Corvette for instance, in the 70's they made a 4 door vette... it didnt recieve nearly as much attention as the 1972 stingray with a 427, why??? the stingray sold more, every reason to promote it more. in the music industry the stingray is Underoath and the 4 door vette is Surrogate...

its easy to justify why surrogate didnt get a 2 page ad in alternative press. its hard to imagine why "love is for the rich" was apparently neglected. They didnt even get reasonable promo pics.
maybe they chose to go this way. that would be a fair explanation. but in any case, this is what i see and by the looks of it, im not the only one wondering such things.
I've always been under the impression that when a band signs to T&N or SolidState they automatically get a following.
I'd like to point out something... the new As Cities Burn (absolutely incredible CD... "Album of the Year" worthy) was heavily promoted, yet I failed to read anywhere about first week sales, etc.
